A new journey into the Metro universe is on the way. On 16 April 2026, 4A Games and Deep Silver officially revealed «Metro 2039», the next mainline video game in the acclaimed post-apocalyptic series inspired by the works of Dmitry Glukhovsky. The game is scheduled for release this winter on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Epic Games Store.

Set in the year 2039, the game returns to post-apocalyptic Moscow, where the last survivors of nuclear war continue to live beneath the poisoned surface, deep inside the tunnels of the Metro. But the underground world has changed. After decades of conflict between stations and factions, the Metro has been brought under the control of a single power: the Novoreich, led by the fanatical Spartan known as Hunter.

What is presented as unity and order is, in reality, a regime built on propaganda, fear and preparation for a new war for the surface. In this darker version of the Metro, silence has become a form of survival, and freedom carries a price. The story follows a new protagonist, the Stranger, a man haunted by violent waking nightmares, who is forced out of exile and drawn back toward the one place he swore never to return: the Metro.

According to the official announcement, «Metro 2039» is an original story created by 4A Games in collaboration with Dmitry Glukhovsky, author of the internationally bestselling Metro novels and creator of the wider Metro universe. While the game is not based on a specific book, it is directly inspired by the world, themes and stories Glukhovsky created.

The new chapter promises a powerful single-player experience combining exploration, survival, combat and stealth with the claustrophobic atmosphere, moral tension and political darkness that have defined Metro from the beginning. For longtime fans, «Metro 2039» continues the legacy of one of modern gaming’s most recognisable post-apocalyptic worlds; for new players, it offers a fresh entry point into the Metro’s haunted and dangerous future.
